The Representation of Gender and Region in episode 1 of Gavin and Stacey

Gavin and Stacey is a popular series that follows the lives of a Welsh and an English family, specifically Barry island and Essex. In the episode I'm reviewing, the two families are going to meet for the first time in London. The families are different in countless ways, but this is one of the main things that make the program as popular as it is.

There is cheap £5 clothing in Wales and designer brands in England, showing a difference in money and status. They use real sets, but when you look at the lighting in the different houses the Welsh house id dark and gloomy, and the English house is light and chirpy. There's many two-shots, as there's a lot of conversation, and the cameramen use jump shots to get from time to time. They have exaggerated accents to clearly show where they are from, and the Welsh are shown to be silly and pathetic. There's the obvious Wales-Essex cliche. The Essex woman is on the Atkins diet, whilst the men are eating loads of chips. The men are playing golf with chicks, but wife doesn't know about it.
